In case you missed it, the archaeology world has exploded over the weekend about a new TV show on “relic hunting” for profit. Sexy Archaeology can fill you in on the details. Apparently archaeologists are not the only ones outraged by this, collectors are too.

Some of the attacks are a bit personal but it appears the Mr. Savage has been selling fake artifacts. This probably means that the TV show will “find” lots of interesting stuff but will it be historical and authentic?
Collectors and archaeologists have always had a rough relationship but this looks like one thing that almost everyone can get behind in hating.

I too share your disdain for “American Digger.” However, making Greg Ellison your spokesman regarding Ric Savage and the show is ill advised. You provided links to Ellison’s website and his blog. He appears to think every antique photograph he owns is of someone famous and believes that bank robber Jesse James lived to be an old man. He also accuses marine archaeologist Maria Jacobsen of planting a gold coin on the recovered Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley. Jacobsen disagreed with Ellison’s claim that he has a photograph of the captain of the Hunley so he trashes her. More research on Ellison shows that he has legal problems of his own with numerous lawsuits in Missouri and being arrested for intent to defraud in South Carolina.

This is merely a point of reference for people who are following the saga. I know nothing about Greg Ellison and the links are a simple “hey this is what other people are saying”. I am not really involved in this whole thing.
