In my last post I talked about how archaeology journal publications put out by commercial units were between 300-600% more expensive than those put out by universities, organizations, and not-for-profits. This post will break down that information even further into the individual publishers and show that not all commercial publishers are equal. I did the same process as before and looked at the average prices of their journals for institutions and then at the cost per page. The results were as follows:

Publisher # of Journals Avg. price in Pounds Avg. price in Dollars
Oxbowbooks 1 £19.00 $31.15
Brepols Publishers 1 £54.56 $89.44
University of Hawaii Press 1 £54.90 $90.00
AltaMira Press 2 £57.65 $94.50
University of Texas Press 1 £58.56 $96.00
Oceania Publications 1 £89.60 $146.89
Edinburgh University Press 1 £100.00 $163.93
Cambridge Journals 8 £131.88 $216.19
Equinox Publishing Ltd 1 £150.00 $245.90
Maney 15 £155.00 $254.10
Left Coast Press 3 £164.09 $269.00
Baywood 1 £245.22 $402.00
Taylor & Francis, Ltd. 7 £262.29 $429.98
Brill 1 £289.52 $474.62
Sage 3 £429.00 $703.28
Springer 8 £462.77 $758.64
Wiley-Blackwell 9 £526.56 $863.21
Elsevier 3 £874.45 $1,433.53

Again these are the prices for institutions only. The following are prices per page:

Publisher # of Journals Avg. price in Pounds Avg. price in Dollars
Brepols Publishers NA NA NA
Oxbowbooks 1 £0.11 $0.19
AltaMira Press 2 £0.16 $0.27
University of Hawaii Press 1 £0.18 $0.30
University of Texas Press 1 £0.29 $0.48
Cambridge Journals 8 £0.38 $0.62
Edinburgh University Press 1 £0.47 $0.76
Baywood 1 £0.54 $0.88
Equinox Publishing Ltd 1 £0.57 $0.93
Maney 14 £0.62 $1.01
Taylor & Francis, Ltd. 7 £0.63 $1.04
Left Coast Press 3 £0.65 $1.07
Oceania Publications 1 £0.75 $1.22
Sage 3 £0.79 $1.30
Brill 1 £0.87 $1.43
Wiley-Blackwell 9 £1.19 $1.95
Elsevier 3 £1.30 $2.13
Springer 8 £1.34 $2.20

Some of these journal prices are comparable to what not-for-profits charge. Of course most do not come with the added benefit of membership to organizations. Not surprising many of the large commercial publishers with profit margins in the %30-40 range are the most expensive.
