List of Archaeology Journals

This is a list of archaeology publications (those that focus primarily on archaeology) that present original research, peer reviewed or not. There are currently 61 open access, 113 print only, and 78 (must pay) print and/or on-line journals in this list. Sorry, only English language journals- not a reflection of anything else but my own short comings when it comes to languages :(.

You could also add Trabajos de Prehistoria. This is an Spanish journal dedicated to Spanish and Mediterranean Prehistory. It is listed in the citation index and it publishes many articles in English as well. You can access it through

You could add British Archaeology to this list. Most of it is written by archaeologists about their own new research, often for the first time in print (not peer reviewed). Much but not all of the texts can be read free online (no illustrations) at http://www.britarch.ac.uk/ba/

You might add
Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society
which has its tables of contents on-line at
http://research.dorsetcountymuseum.org/cumindex.html
At the present it’s “you have to pay” but a few very old volumes (before 1923) have been digitised (not by DNHAS), the details being on the site. Form provided for ordering offprints, volumes of PDNHAS and other publications of the Society.

Hi Doug,
I thoroughly enjoy your website and the list of journals is Great! I am under the impression though that open access journals are generally not accredited and as such I cannot publish in them. Right or wrong, the h-index and the journal impact factor rule (… my career).

Hi Doug,

You might like to add Antiquity to your list. The main journal is available online and print and is peer-reviewed. The Antiquity Bulletin is online, open access and not peer-reviewed.

The main journal has an online archive back to 1927, and the Bulletin back to 2003.

There a journal Archive Orientální published by Oriental Institute, Prague, Czech Republic… It is peer reviewed journal mostly with contributions in English (minority is in German).

You should add two journals to this list: the Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology, and California Archaeology. Both are very influential in California and the Great Basin of the western U.S.

Dear Doug,

I have created an experimental wordpress blog called Journal Polls (see http://jrnls.net).

As a start, I set up a collection of opinion polls for a small number of archaeology journals. On the page showing this collection, a showed a link to your journal list here.

Since the potential number of journals to be polled is huge, it might be best for me to add new polls in response to requests, since such polls are more likely to atract interest.

I am a playwright and my lead character is a cantankerous, retired archeologist. In the play, I mention a top publication for which he writes. I know this may be a touchy subject here, but could you give me the names of some top academic archeological reviews (magazines) that peers across the world would generally agree to be among the most prestigious? Honestly, pick any it does not matter. Everyone thinks their journal or the journal they post in is the bee’s knees. If you want to make your character seem real have them argue over the best. Otherwise pick some whose names you like and no one will be the wiser.

I asked the question because the journal I first wrote into my play was criticised by one reader as not being ‘academic enough’ for the character I have depicted, so I really need to know which the highest regarded are in academic circles (in the UK at least).

Sounds as though your reader is a bit cantankerous themselves. If you need to put down a name then use ‘Antiquity’. It is old and well regarded. There is no highest but that would pass muster with your tough reader.
